Eine Krise bekommen
As a collective, we critically engage with teaching practices as well as the structures of art universities, organizing formats for exchange, learning, and action. We (Destina Atasayar, Katharina Brenner, Lu Herbst, and Lucie Jo Knilli) studied together in the Visual Communication Bachelor’s program at the University of the Arts Berlin, where we first came together as a collective while collaborating on the publication Eine Krise bekommen. From 2021 to 2023, we organized readings, lectures, workshops, and a summer school.

“Wir müssen Ihnen leider mitteilen, …”

Courtyard of the University of the Arts Berlin (Hardenbergstr. 33, 10623 Berlin)
2022

This interactive installation is a response to the rejection letters sent out every year that deny thousands of applicants access to art universities. While the reasons for rejection are usually not apparent and form an invisible wall of exclusion mechanisms and discrimination, here answers are collected collectively. This intervention was collectively developed by the participants of the seminar “Eine Krise bekommen: Kunsthochschulen und Ausschlussmechanismen” (2022) and shown during the UdK Rundgang 2022.

What exclusions and discriminations are already in place before students are admitted to the impressive walls of art schools? What expectations are naturally placed on students and who can actually fulfill them? How do universities present themselves to the outside world and how do we experience reality? How diverse is the student body and who is excluded before and during their studies?
